Australia student visa from Nepal: requirements, documents and fee in 2026.
To get an Australian Student visa (subclass 500) from Nepal you need a CoE from your university, health cover for your whole stay, AUD 29,710 a year in living money plus tuition and travel, IELTS Academic 6.0 or an equivalent score, and honest Genuine Student answers. The fee is AUD 2,500. Since January 2026 Nepal is at Evidence Level 3, so every money document is read closely.

The short version
- Five things decide the visa: a CoE, OSHC health cover, money with its source, English and Genuine Student answers.
- Money to show: first-year tuition + AUD 29,710 living + travel. For a AUD 35,000 master's that's about Rs 70 lakh.
- Order matters: offer, NOC, deposit and OSHC, CoE, then the visa. Paying a deposit before the NOC blocks your bank transfer.
- Lodge at least 8 weeks before your course starts. Book biometrics and the medical the day Home Affairs asks.
- From 2 October 2026, a new application can't include your spouse or children unless you're exempt.
The five things that decide the visa
The subclass 500 visa has five parts. Miss one and the file fails, however strong the rest is.
| Requirement | In plain words, for a Nepali applicant |
|---|---|
| CoE | Confirmation of Enrolment. Your university issues it after you accept the offer and pay the deposit. No CoE, no lodgement. |
| OSHC | Overseas Student Health Cover, the health insurance Australia requires, bought for your whole stay before you lodge. About AUD 600 to 800 a year for one person. |
| Money | Your first year’s tuition, plus AUD 29,710 for 12 months of living costs, plus travel, with the source of every rupee explained. |
| English | IELTS Academic 6.0 overall, or the equal score Home Affairs lists for PTE, TOEFL and other tests. |
| Genuine Student | Your answers on why this course, this university and Australia, and what you’ll do after. |
The fee is AUD 2,500 from 1 July 2026, about Rs 2.65 lakh at Rs 105.97 per AUD (18 Oct 2026).
What changed in 2026
Three changes matter for a file lodged from Kathmandu now:
- Evidence Level 3. Several sources report Nepal moved from Level 2 to Level 3 in January 2026. Officers expect full money and English evidence with the application, and read it closely.
- The family rule. From 2 October 2026, new applications can’t include a partner or children unless an exemption applies (doctoral students are the main one for Nepal).
- No switching from inside Australia. From 2 October 2026, most temporary visa holders can’t apply for a new Student visa onshore. Choose a course you can finish on one visa.

The order of steps, and why it matters
Most delays we fix come from doing the right steps in the wrong order. This is the order that works from Nepal.
| Step | What happens | Typical time | Paid to |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Shortlist and apply | Courses that follow from your study or work, applied with your marksheets and English score | Median 17 days to an offer | University (application fee, often Rs 0) |
| 2. Accept the offer | Read the conditions: English, documents, deposit amount and refund terms | 1 to 2 weeks | |
| 3. NOC | Apply online to the Ministry of Education. Your bank won’t send tuition without it | 1 to 5 working days | Rs 2,000 online |
| 4. Deposit and OSHC | Bank transfer of the deposit (often one semester) and buy health cover | 1 week | University, insurer |
| 5. CoE | The university issues it after both payments arrive | Days to 2 weeks | |
| 6. Lodge the visa | Online in ImmiAccount, with every document | 1 day | AUD 2,500 to Home Affairs |
| 7. Biometrics and medical | Booked when Home Affairs asks, at VFS and a panel clinic in Kathmandu | 1 to 2 weeks | VFS, clinic |
| 8. Decision | Reply to any request the same day | Often 3 to 6 weeks |
The NOC must come before the deposit. A bank can’t send tuition abroad without it, and a deposit paid another way can create problems later. Read how to get your NOC.
The documents checklist
Bring these to your counsellor before anything is lodged. We check each one twice.

The money rule, worked out in rupees
For a one-year master’s at AUD 35,000 (an example from the middle of our shortlists):
| Item | AUD | Rupees (18 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| First-year tuition | 35,000 | about Rs 37.1 lakh |
| Living costs, 12 months | 29,710 | about Rs 31.5 lakh |
| Travel (your own fare) | about 1,500 | about Rs 1.6 lakh |
| Total to show | 66,210 | about Rs 70.2 lakh |
If you’ve paid part of the tuition, the receipt counts and the amount goes down. What the officer checks next is the source: how long the money has been there, and whether the family’s income explains it. The bank balance guide has the patterns that pass and fail.
The mistakes we see in refused files
Here’s the honest truth: refusals almost never come from English. They come from four places.
| Cause | Our refusals, all 10 countries, FY 2025/26 | What fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Financial evidence | 79 | Funds held over time, with tax-cleared income behind them |
| Genuine Student assessment | 61 | Answers that connect your past, the course and your plan |
| Course choice gap | 31 | A course that follows from your study or work |
| Documents | 14 | A checklist, and a second person checking it |
The officer reads your file as one story. If your bank says Rs 70 lakh, your father’s tax record says Rs 4 lakh a year and your statement says you want to study cookery after a BBA, those three pages contradict each other. Fix the contradiction before you lodge.
A typical approved file, from first call to visa
A student from Butwal with a BBA (CGPA 3.1), IELTS 6.5 and two years in a bank’s loan department applied for a Master of Professional Accounting in Melbourne. Her father, a government school teacher, had salary and tax records for 15 years; the family took a loan against land for the rest.
We lodged with the father’s tax records, the loan sanction letter, the land valuation and her employer’s letter. The Genuine Student answers tied her loan-department work to the master’s and to a job in credit risk at home or abroad. Lodged in week 9, granted in week 13, landed in week 16.
After the visa is granted
Read the grant letter before you book a flight. It lists your conditions:
- Work: 48 hours a fortnight while your course is in session, unlimited in scheduled breaks.
- Study: stay enrolled, attend, and pass. Tell your university if you’re struggling, early.
- Health cover: keep OSHC for your whole stay.
- Address: tell your university within 7 days if you move.
Then: the pre-departure checklist, and how to work while studying without risking the visa.
