Working while you study
20 hours a week during term, with a student work contract.
- Student jobs are common in logistics, retail and hospitality.
- Dutch or French helps for most jobs.
- Student work pays lower social contributions, so take-home pay is good.
Plan year 1 on your own funds. Your residence card can take weeks to arrive, and some employers wait for it.

Daily life

After the visa
Your first weeks in Belgium.
Your first week
Register at your commune (town hall) within 8 days, book the residence check, open a bank account and enrol.
Your counsellor calls on day 1 and after week 1, with your parents on the same updates.
Study and work, honestly
Exams come in January and June, often oral. Twenty hours of work a week is the limit. Keep your residence card renewal date in your calendar.
After graduation
Apply for the 12-month search year before your student permit ends. A qualifying job moves you to a single permit.
