The short version

Netherlands in numbers.

The Netherlands teaches more degrees in English than any other country in continental Europe, and its graduates get a year to find work with no permit needed.

Two things catch Nepali students out: non-EU deadlines come months before EU ones, and housing is harder to find than the money.

The table has the rules; the process puts them in order, with every fee.

Housing is the hard part

The IND asks you to show €1,130.77 a month. Finding a room is harder than finding the money, especially in Amsterdam and Utrecht.

Working while you study

16 hours a week with a work permit (TWV) that your employer holds, or full-time from June to August.

  • Your employer, not you, applies for the TWV.
  • English jobs exist in big cities, especially in delivery, hospitality and tech.
  • Dutch health insurance becomes compulsory once you work.

Start your housing search the day you're admitted. Never pay a deposit for a room you haven't seen on a video call.

Jobs after study

Tech, logistics, engineering and agri-food hire international graduates. The orientation year lets you work in any job while you search, and a qualifying job moves you to a highly skilled migrant permit.

Daily life

Teaching is direct and interactive; you'll be expected to give your opinion in class. The Dutch are blunt, punctual and friendly once you know them.

After the visa

Your first weeks in the Netherlands.

Your first week

First week: register at the municipality to get your BSN, pick up the residence card, open a bank account, and buy a second-hand bike.

Your counsellor calls on day 1 and after week 1, with your parents on the same updates.

Study and work, honestly

Dutch universities use a credit threshold in year 1 (the BSA): fall below it and you may have to leave. Know your BSA target from week 1.

After graduation

Apply for the orientation year within 3 years of graduating: 12 months to work in any job or search. A qualifying job moves you to a highly skilled migrant permit.

We stay with you

The same counsellor stays with you through year 1: housing problems, BSA worries, a change of programme.

Honest fit

Should you choose the Netherlands?

Good fit

Choose Netherlands if

  • You want an English-taught degree with strong job links.
  • You can apply early: non-EU deadlines come first.
  • You're ready to work hard to find housing.

An honest note

Look elsewhere if

  • You're planning around EU deadlines.
  • You need part-time work beyond 16 hours a week in term.
  • You'd only consider Amsterdam.

Find the room before you celebrate the offer. More Dutch plans fail on housing than on visas. We start the housing search the week you're admitted.
