Study in Norway from Nepal

Study in Norway from Nepal: no longer free, still worth it for the right course.

Norway suits students in fields where it leads, like energy, maritime and aquaculture, who can fund it. Public universities have charged non-EU students tuition since autumn 2023: NOK 140,000 to NOK 260,000 a year on our shortlists. You show NOK 170,368 for the 2026/27 year. 91.4% of our 58 Norway files were approved in FY 2025/26.

The short version

Norway in numbers.

Norway leads the world in energy, maritime engineering and aquaculture, and its universities are small, well-funded and quiet. It is also the most expensive country we cover.

Norway is no longer free for non-EU students. Anyone who tells you otherwise is using information from before autumn 2023.

The table has the rules; the process puts them in order, with every fee.

Working while you study

20 hours a week in term and full-time in holidays. Wages are high, but most part-time jobs need Norwegian.

  • Food and transport cost far more than in Kathmandu. Budget carefully for the first month.
  • Your permit is renewed each year with the funds shown again.
  • Students in engineering and aquaculture often find paid summer work in their field.

Show the full NOK 170,368 from your own funds. Part-time pay is never part of the plan.

Jobs after study

Energy, maritime, aquaculture and engineering hire graduates, and Norwegian at B1 or above makes a large difference. A job-seeker permit gives you up to a year to find work.

Daily life

Universities are small and teaching is relaxed and practical. Norwegians spend weekends outdoors; join a hiking or ski group and you'll make friends faster.

After the visa

Your first weeks in Norway.

Your first week

Register with the police for your residence card, get your national ID or D-number, open a bank account and collect your first deposit payment.

Your counsellor calls on day 1 and after week 1, with your parents on the same updates.

Study and work, honestly

Classes are small and practical. Your permit is renewed each year with the funds shown again, so plan year 2's money before year 1 ends.

After graduation

A job-seeker permit gives you up to a year. With a skilled job you move to a work permit; permanent residence can follow after three years.

We stay with you

The same counsellor stays with you through year 1, including your first permit renewal.

Honest fit

Should you choose Norway?

Good fit

Choose Norway if

  • Your field is one Norway leads in, and you have the money for it.
  • You'd rather study somewhere smaller and quieter.
  • You'll learn some Norwegian.

An honest note

Look elsewhere if

  • Someone told you Norway is free. It stopped being free for non-EU students in 2023.
  • Your budget is under about Rs 45 lakh for year 1.
  • You need part-time work to pay rent from month one.

Europe isn't the cheap backup to Australia. Norway has charged non-EU tuition since autumn 2023, and its living costs are the highest we see. It's a great choice for the right student, and a costly one for a student who picked it because a post said free education.
