Study in Australia after +2 from Nepal: which route fits your GPA.
With a +2 GPA of about 2.4 to 3.0 or above and IELTS 6.0 to 6.5, most Australian universities take Nepali students straight into a 3-year bachelor's. With lower marks, a diploma (often 8 to 12 months) can lead into year 2 of the degree, and a foundation year leads into year 1. In 2026 the route matters for the visa: university courses were granted far more often than vocational ones for Nepali applicants.

The short version
- Direct entry to most bachelor's: +2 GPA about 2.4 to 3.0 or above and IELTS 6.0 to 6.5, depending on the university and course.
- Lower GPA: a university diploma that leads into year 2 of the bachelor's often costs less overall than a foundation year.
- Higher-education files for Nepal were granted 68.2% of the time in FY 2025/26; vocational files 37.9%. Choose a university pathway, not a cheap college diploma.
- A bachelor's year 1 costs about Rs 65.9 to Rs 82.9 lakh; the whole 3-year degree about Rs 1.9 to 2.4 crore before part-time income.
- A gap after +2 needs evidence. Work letters, a course in Nepal or another documented reason.
Three routes after +2
| Route | Typical entry from NEB | Length | Leads to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bachelor’s, direct entry | GPA about 2.4 to 3.0 or above, IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 | 3 years (4 for engineering and some honours) | The degree |
| University diploma, into year 2 | GPA about 2.0 to 2.4, IELTS 5.5 to 6.0 | 8 to 12 months, then 2 years of the degree | The same degree, often in 3 years total |
| Foundation year, into year 1 | GPA below the diploma level, or a missing subject | About 1 year, then 3 years | The degree, in about 4 years total |
Figures are typical of our shortlists last year; each university sets its own, and competitive courses ask more.
Which route the visa data favours
The route also changes your visa odds. Home Affairs data for Nepali primary applicants in FY 2025/26:
| Sector | Grant rate |
|---|---|
| Higher education (university bachelor’s and diplomas run by universities) | 68.2% |
| Vocational education and training (most private college diplomas) | 37.9% |
A diploma run by a university, or its own college, with entry to year 2 of that university’s degree, is usually assessed as higher education. A cheap vocational diploma at a private college is the route the data says is most often refused. Ask which sector your course is in before you accept.
Stream by stream
| Your +2 stream | Courses it opens | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Science (with biology) | Nursing, health, biomedical science, IT, engineering, data | Nursing and engineering ask higher marks |
| Science (with maths) | Engineering, IT, data, physics, architecture | Maths and physics marks matter more than the GPA |
| Management | Business, accounting, IT, hospitality, tourism | Accounting asks for good marks in accounts and maths |
| Humanities and education | Education, social work, arts, communication, psychology | Teaching and social work need high English |
What it costs, in rupees
At Rs 105.97 per AUD (18 Oct 2026):
| At a glance | Direct bachelor’s | Diploma into year 2 | Foundation into year 1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total length | 3 years | about 3 years | about 4 years |
| Tuition, whole course | AUD 90,000 to 135,000 | AUD 85,000 to 125,000 | AUD 115,000 to 165,000 |
| Living, whole course | about AUD 89,000 | about AUD 89,000 | about AUD 119,000 |
| Total | about Rs 1.9 to 2.4 crore | about Rs 1.8 to 2.3 crore | about Rs 2.5 to 3.0 crore |
The foundation route costs a year more of living. That’s why we usually suggest a university diploma when your marks are close.
A gap after +2
A year or two after +2 is common and fine with evidence: a job with a letter, salary slips or tax records; a bachelor’s started in Nepal; a course or a documented family reason. What fails is a gap with nothing to show for it. Study gap accepted has what each country accepts.
Low GPA, honest answer
If your GPA is below 2.0, Australia is hard right now: few university pathways accept it, and the vocational route has the lowest grant rate. The options that work better:
- A year of study in Nepal first (a diploma or the first year of a bachelor’s) with good marks, then apply.
- A year of documented work, with IELTS improved, then a university diploma.
- A different country whose entry rules suit your profile.
From our files. Rojan Maharjan from Lalitpur came to us in 2023 with a GPA of 2.1, a four-year gap and a relative offering to “show” Rs 40 lakh. We told him not yet. He took a one-year diploma in Kathmandu, worked at a software company and scored IELTS 7.0. In 2025 he started a master’s in Tampere, Finland, on a 50% scholarship.
Your after +2 checklist
- Your NEB transcript and character certificate, with the GPA and subject grades
- IELTS or PTE booked in time for the intake
- A course that follows from your stream, chosen from the job you want
- The course’s sector checked: university-run, not vocational, if you can
- Any gap explained, with documents
- Parents’ income and tax papers started now, not after the offer
