The best city in Australia for Nepali students: rent, jobs and visas, compared.
There's no single best city. Sydney and Melbourne have the most jobs and the biggest Nepali communities, and the highest rents. Brisbane is cheaper with a growing job market. Adelaide, Perth, Hobart and Canberra cost less, count as regional for some visa benefits, and suit students who want to stay on after graduating. Choose the city for your course and career, then check the rent.

The short version
- Shared room a month, our students' spend: Sydney AUD 1,350 to 1,750, Adelaide AUD 900 to 1,200.
- Sydney and Melbourne: most jobs and the largest Nepali communities; the highest rent.
- Adelaide, Perth, Hobart, Canberra count as regional for some visa benefits and cost less to live in.
- Choose by your course and career first. A nursing student in Adelaide usually does better than one in Sydney chosen for relatives.
- Check the campus postcode: some 'Sydney' campuses are in suburbs an hour from the centre.
The cities, side by side
Monthly spend from our students sharing a room in 2026; jobs and community are our counsellors’ view from where our students live.
| City | Shared room a month | Living total a month | Part-time jobs | Nepali community | Regional for visas? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney | AUD 1,350 to 1,750 | AUD 2,040 to 2,650 | Most | Largest | No |
| Melbourne | AUD 1,150 to 1,500 | AUD 1,810 to 2,370 | Many | Very large | No |
| Brisbane | AUD 1,050 to 1,400 | AUD 1,690 to 2,210 | Growing | Large | No |
| Adelaide | AUD 900 to 1,200 | AUD 1,490 to 1,950 | Steady | Active | Yes, a regional category |
| Perth | AUD 1,000 to 1,350 | AUD 1,600 to 2,100 | Steady, mining and health | Active | Yes, a regional category |
| Hobart | AUD 850 to 1,150 | AUD 1,450 to 1,900 | Fewer | Small, close-knit | Yes, a regional category |
| Canberra | AUD 1,050 to 1,400 | AUD 1,700 to 2,200 | Government and services | Active | Yes, a regional category |
Perth, Hobart and Canberra figures are our counsellors’ estimates from fewer students. Check each campus’s postcode on the Home Affairs regional list; the category decides any extra post-study time.
City by city, honestly
Sydney. The most jobs, the most Nepali shops and festivals, the most familiar faces. Also the highest rent: many students spend half their living money on a room. Good for students with a strong budget and a course only offered there.
Melbourne. Similar to Sydney, slightly cheaper, with excellent trams and many universities. Cold winters: budget AUD 150 to 300 for warm clothes and more for heating.
Brisbane. Warmer, a little cheaper, and a growing job market ahead of the 2032 Olympics. A good middle choice.
Adelaide. Rent about AUD 300 to 500 a month lower than Sydney, a strong health and aged-care job market, and regional benefits for visas. Our nursing students do well here.
Perth. Far from the east, but steady jobs in health, mining services and engineering, and regional benefits. Flights to Kathmandu often connect through Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.
Hobart. Small, safe, cheaper, and a strong regional option, with fewer part-time jobs. Suits students who’ll study hard and don’t need a job from month 2.
Canberra. Small, well paid, and regional for some benefits. Government jobs often need citizenship; services and hospitality don’t.
How to choose
- Start with the course. Which universities offer it, and where are their campuses?
- Then the career. Where are the jobs in your field? Health and aged care are everywhere; mining and engineering cluster in Perth and Queensland.
- Then the money. Can your budget carry the rent for a year without a job?
- Then the visa. Would regional benefits help your plan after graduating?
- Last, relatives. Family nearby helps in the first weeks. It’s rarely a good reason to pay Sydney rent for 3 years.
From our files. Prakash Tamang from Chitwan wanted Sydney because his cousins were there. His goal was nursing and, long term, permanent residence. We showed him Adelaide’s rent, about AUD 120 a week lower, and the post-study benefits of regional study. He chose Adelaide and now works in a hospital there.
The suburb trap
A university’s “Sydney campus” can be in a suburb an hour from the centre, and a college’s “Melbourne campus” can be a floor in an office building. Before you accept, look up the exact campus address, the nearest station, and where students actually live.
