Cost to study in Germany from Nepal: what free tuition really costs, in rupees.
At a public university in Germany you pay no tuition, only a semester contribution of about €150 to €400. Your biggest cost is the €11,904 a year you show in a blocked account, which then pays you €992 a month to live on. With health insurance, the visa and the first months' extras, year 1 costs about Rs 21 to Rs 21.9 lakh. Baden-Württemberg is the exception: it charges non-EU students €1,500 a semester.

The short version
- Year 1 at a public university: about Rs 21 to Rs 21.9 lakh, mostly the €11,904 blocked account.
- Tuition €0 at most public universities; €1,500 a semester in Baden-Württemberg; €9,000 to €18,000 a year at private ones.
- Health insurance about €140 to €150 a month; the semester contribution often includes a transport ticket.
- Rent decides the rest: a shared flat (WG) can cost €300 to €450 in Chemnitz or Leipzig and €650 to €900 in Munich.
- Part-time work (140 full days a year, €13.90 minimum wage) helps with living costs once you have some German.

What part-time work covers
You can work 140 full days or 280 half days a year. The minimum wage is €13.90 an hour from 1 January 2026. At 20 hours a week that’s about €1,200 a month before deductions, but most part-time jobs need some German, and the first one takes time to find. Plan year 1 on the blocked account, not on wages. Work during and after studies.
Germany against Australia, for the same student
From our files. Sagar Rai from Ilam had Rs 9 lakh saved and a BE in mechanical engineering with 72%, and had been told only Australia would work. Rs 9 lakh didn’t cover a third of the living money Australia asks to see. We compared the two in rupees: at a public university in Chemnitz, his biggest cost was the €11,904 blocked account, not tuition. He’s now doing an MSc in Mechatronics there, the blocked account funded with an education loan.
| At a glance | Australia, 2-year master’s | Germany, 2-year master’s at a public university |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | AUD 60,000 to 92,000 | €0 plus semester contributions |
| Living money to show | AUD 29,710 a year | €11,904 a year |
| Two years, all in | about Rs 1 to 1.5 crore | about Rs 45 to 55 lakh |
Is Germany cheaper for you?
Usually, if three things are true: your grades meet a public university’s entry rules, your bachelor’s matches the master’s, and you’ll learn German for daily life and work. If any of those isn’t true, the “free” degree can cost a year of waiting or a private university’s fees. Tuition-free public universities explains the entry rules.
