Northern Cyprus university degrees: the recognition risk, and how to check any 'Cyprus' offer.

Degrees from universities in northern Cyprus, the self-declared TRNC that only Turkey recognises, aren't recognised by the Republic of Cyprus or most EU countries. Agents sometimes sell them simply as 'Cyprus'. Before you pay anything, check that the university is in the Republic, that its programme is accredited by the Republic's quality agency (CYQAA), and that the Republic's migration department issues your entry permit.

The short version

  • The TRNC (northern Cyprus) is recognised only by Turkey. Its degrees aren't recognised by the Republic of Cyprus or most of the EU.
  • Cities in the north: Famagusta (Gazimağusa), Kyrenia (Girne), northern Nicosia (Lefkoşa). In the Republic: Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos, southern Nicosia.
  • Check accreditation with CYQAA, the Republic's quality agency, and that the Republic's migration department issues your permit.
  • A TRNC permit doesn't let you study, live or work in the Republic or the rest of the EU.
  • Recognition in Nepal is decided case by case. Ask before you enrol, not after.

How to check any “Cyprus” offer in 3 steps

  1. The address. Find the university’s full address and check it against the map above.
  2. The accreditation. Look for the programme with CYQAA, the Republic of Cyprus’s quality agency.
  3. The permit. Ask who issues your entry permit. It should be the Republic’s Civil Registry and Migration Department, applied for through the university.

If any of the three doesn’t check out, don’t pay.

Both offers said “Cyprus”

From our files. Sanjay Chaudhary from Bardiya (+2 in management, GPA 2.9) was offered a “Cyprus” degree by an agent; the university was in the north. Degrees from TRNC universities aren’t recognised by the Republic of Cyprus or most of the EU. We showed him the difference on a map before anything else. He moved to a Republic of Cyprus university with a similar fee and started his BBA in Nicosia on time.

What a TRNC degree means later

Your plan The risk
A master’s in Europe Most EU universities won’t accept the bachelor’s
A job in the EU Employers and immigration authorities may not recognise the degree
A job in the Gulf or Nepal Decided case by case; ask the employer or authority first
Moving to the Republic of Cyprus Not possible on a northern permit

Our view

Check who you’re paying, and for what. A low fee for a degree most of Europe won’t recognise isn’t cheap. The Republic of Cyprus has accredited universities at similar fees: cost to study in Cyprus.

FAQ

What students ask us next.

Is a Northern Cyprus degree valid in Nepal?

Recognition in Nepal is decided by Nepali authorities case by case. The bigger risk is in Europe: the Republic of Cyprus and most EU countries don't recognise degrees from TRNC universities. Check before you enrol.

How do I know if a Cyprus university is in the north?

Look at the city: Famagusta (Gazimağusa), Kyrenia (Girne) and northern Nicosia (Lefkoşa) are in the north. Then check the programme's accreditation with the Republic's quality agency, CYQAA, and ask who issues the entry permit.

Can I work in Europe with a Northern Cyprus degree?

It's very difficult. Most EU countries don't recognise TRNC degrees, so employers and immigration authorities may not accept the qualification.

Can I move to the Republic of Cyprus from a university in the north?

Not on your TRNC permit. A northern student permit doesn't give you the right to study, live or work in the Republic of Cyprus or elsewhere in the EU.

Why do agents send students to northern Cyprus?

Fees and entry rules are often lower, and some agents earn high commissions. The offer may simply say 'Cyprus'. Ask the agent directly which side of the island the university is on.
