TOEFL exam fee in Nepal, 2026: the cost, the new format, and when TOEFL is the right test.
TOEFL iBT costs USD 195 in Nepal in 2026, about Rs 29,700, paid to ETS by card when you book. It's the cheapest of the three main tests, but fewer of our students take it, because Australian and UK universities more often name IELTS or PTE first. TOEFL changed on 21 January 2026: reading and listening now adapt to you, the test is shorter, and scores come on a 1 to 6 scale, with the old 0 to 120 also reported until January 2028.

The short version
- TOEFL iBT: USD 195, about Rs 29,700, paid to ETS by card. The cheapest of the three main tests.
- Choose up to 4 free score reports before the test. Reports sent later cost extra.
- New format from 21 January 2026: adaptive reading and listening, shorter, scored 1 to 6, with 0 to 120 also reported until January 2028.
- Strongest fit: German, Dutch, Nordic and US programmes. Australia's visa accepts 67; at-home tests don't count for it.
- Practise on new-format material only. Most free material online is still written for the old test.
The fee in rupees
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | USD 195 (about Rs 29,700) |
| Up to 4 score reports, chosen before the test | Included |
| Extra score reports, ordered later | A fee per report, set by ETS |
| Rescheduling | A fee, if allowed under ETS’s terms |
At Rs 152.24 per USD (18 Oct 2026). Pay with a dollar-enabled card, and ask your bank to open it for international online payments first.
The new TOEFL, from 21 January 2026
| Item | Before | From 21 January 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Reading and listening | Fixed | Adaptive: the second part depends on how you did in the first |
| Length | About 2 hours | Shorter |
| Score | 0 to 120 | 1 to 6 bands, with 0 to 120 also reported until January 2028 |
| Practice material | Plenty | Much less; most free material is still the old format |
The adaptive sections change how you should practise. Getting the first part right moves you to a harder second part, where the higher scores are. Rushing early questions now costs more than it used to.
Where TOEFL is the right choice
| Your shortlist | TOEFL? |
|---|---|
| Germany, English-taught master’s | Usually accepted, often listed first |
| Netherlands, Belgium | Usually accepted |
| Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway | Usually accepted, with set section scores at some |
| United States | The usual test |
| Australia | Accepted by most universities and the visa (67) |
| UK, degree level | Many universities; check each |
| UK, below degree level | No: you need a SELT such as IELTS for UKVI |
If one programme on your list doesn’t take TOEFL, you may need a second test. That usually makes IELTS the better single booking.
Timing the test against your deadline
| Deadline | Book TOEFL by |
|---|---|
| Finland and Sweden, January round | Early November, with a retake slot before the round closes |
| Germany, winter semester (many programmes close 15 July or earlier) | May |
| Netherlands, early deadlines | 6 weeks before the programme’s date |
| Denmark, 1 March for many master’s | Mid-January |
From our files. Kritika Pant from Baitadi had TOEFL 71 two months before Finland’s January joint application; her programmes asked for 79 to 84. We timed her batch backwards from the deadline, with a week to spare for a retake. Reading was already her strength, so class time went to listening and writing. She scored 84 in November 2025 and was admitted to Tampere for August 2026.
Before you book
- Confirm every programme accepts TOEFL iBT, at which score, and with which section minimums.
- Check whether each programme has updated its page for the 1 to 6 scale, or still quotes 0 to 120.
- Choose your 4 free score reports before the ETS deadline.
- Book a test centre, not the Home Edition, if Australia’s visa is involved.
Our view
TOEFL is the cheapest booking and a good fit for continental Europe, but only if every programme on your list accepts it. Practise on the new format only: our TOEFL classes were rebuilt for the January 2026 test, run 6 weeks, and gained +11 points on average last year.
