A one-year master's in the UK: what you gain, what you give up, and who it suits.
Most UK taught master's last 12 months, which makes them one of the cheapest and fastest ways to a foreign master's: about about Rs 62.7 to Rs 84 lakh all in, against Rs 1 to 1.5 crore for a 2-year master's in Australia. The trade-offs: a tight year with a dissertation over summer, few internships, no dependants on a taught course, and an 18-month Graduate visa for applications from 2027. Check how your employer or a future university abroad will read a one-year degree.

The short version
- One year, all in: about Rs 62.7 to Rs 84 lakh. A 2-year master's in Australia: about Rs 1 to 1.5 crore.
- The year is intense: taught modules from September to May, then a dissertation over summer, often with no long vacation for work.
- Taught master's students can't bring dependants on the Student visa.
- After it: the Graduate visa, 2 years if you apply by 31 Dec 2026, 18 months after.
- Some employers and universities abroad weigh credits, not years. Ask them, and keep your module transcript.
The trade, in one table
| At a glance | UK one-year master’s | 2-year master’s (Australia, much of Europe) |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 12 months (some 16 to 24 with a placement) | 1.5 to 2 years |
| Total cost from Nepal | about about Rs 62.7 to Rs 84 lakh | Australia about Rs 1 to 1.5 crore |
| Time out of work | About a year | About two years |
| Work during the course | 20 hours a week in term; little summer break | 20 to 24 hours a week; long summer breaks |
| Internships | Few, unless you pick a placement-year course | More common |
| Dependants | Not on a taught master’s | Depends on the country |
| Post-study work | Graduate visa: 2 years if applied by 31 Dec 2026, then 18 months | Australia 485: 2 years |
What the year really looks like
| Months | What happens |
|---|---|
| September to December | Taught modules and assessments |
| January to May | More modules, exams or coursework |
| June to August | Dissertation or final project |
| September | Submission, then the Graduate visa |
It’s fast. Students who struggle are usually the ones who planned 20 hours of work every week and didn’t plan for dissertation months.
Who it suits
- Graduates with work experience who want a master’s without two years out.
- Students on a tighter budget who still want a well-known university.
- Career changers who need a specialist master’s (data, project management, public health) and a fast route to a Graduate visa.
Who should think twice
- Married students who want a spouse to come: taught master’s don’t allow dependants.
- Students planning a PhD in Europe where a 2-year, 120-ECTS master’s is expected. Check the target university’s rules first.
- Students who need long paid internships to build a CV: choose a placement-year master’s, or a longer course elsewhere.
The credit question
A UK master’s is usually 180 UK credits, often read as about 90 ECTS in Europe, where many master’s are 120 ECTS. For most jobs this doesn’t matter. It can matter for a PhD application in some European countries, or for specific government jobs. If you have a plan like that, ask the institution before you choose.
Choosing a good one-year master’s
- The course follows from your past. It’s what the credibility interview checks.
- Look at the modules, not just the title: “MSc Data Science” covers very different things at different universities.
- Placement year or not. A 2-year placement master’s costs more and gives a year of UK work experience.
- City. Outside London saves about Rs 6.5 lakh on the visa funds figure alone.
- Scholarships. £1,000 to £6,000 on our shortlists last year.
From our files. Anish K.C. from Butwal chose an MSc in Data Science in Leeds: a year, and a city cheaper than London. His first visa attempt, through another consultancy, had failed on the 28-day funds rule; the second, with the dates set properly, came in 19 days.
